Instances of discovering hidden cameras in Airbnb or hotel rooms may seem uncommon, but they are more prevalent than one might expect. Recently, a woman shared her harrowing experience on TikTok, shedding light on the disturbing trend and the potential consequences for the Airbnb host involved.
The incident occurred during a girls’ trip to British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast in Canada to celebrate a friend’s 30th birthday. TikToker @kennedyallegedly and her group of 15 friends were enjoying their stay until one member of the party began expressing concerns about the property.
Initially dismissed as paranoia, the woman persisted in her belief that there were hidden cameras in the Airbnb. Kennedy, the TikToker recounting the story, mentioned, “We were like, ‘girl, you watch way too much TikTok, there are no cameras in this house, you’re just being dramatic.'” However, their skepticism soon transformed into alarm.
The cautious friend embarked on a thorough search of the premises, meticulously examining every nook and cranny for any signs of hidden cameras. Eventually, she stumbled upon a broken electrical outlet in the bathroom that appeared to face directly towards the shower. This discovery prompted further investigation.
Kennedy shared details of the outlet, revealing, “You can see in the top here, there’s nothing. Looks totally normal.” However, upon examining the bottom outlet, a tiny camera lens was plainly visible in the section where the grounding prong should be. Realizing the gravity of the situation, the group immediately contacted the authorities.
To Kennedy’s dismay, she also realized that the hidden camera had captured her engaging in embarrassing activities the previous night. Worried about the potential exposure of the footage, she expressed her embarrassment and apprehension.
Interestingly, this was not the first time Kennedy found herself caught in an uncomfortable situation involving her gastrointestinal health. In a separate incident during her first Christmas visit to her boyfriend’s parents’ house in December 2022, she went viral after experiencing digestive troubles. Unfortunately, luck was not on her side.
However, while the previous incident was merely embarrassing, the discovery of the hidden camera in the Airbnb crossed legal boundaries. Unable to retrieve the camera themselves, Kennedy and her friends sought assistance from the police.
Upon further investigation, the authorities uncovered multiple hidden cameras throughout the Airbnb. Additionally, Kennedy noticed other unsettling aspects of the rental, including suspicious stains on the duvets and offensive graffiti in the bathroom. The presence of hidden cameras, combined with these findings, left Kennedy and her friends genuinely fearful that the Airbnb owner might be monitoring their actions, heightening their concerns.
Instances of hidden cameras in Airbnbs and hotels are unfortunately common, with reports of discoveries in private spaces becoming increasingly frequent. Shockingly, Airbnb permits the use of hidden cameras and audio recording devices as long as they are disclosed and restricted to “common areas” but not bedrooms or bathrooms. Therefore, it is crucial for guests to carefully read the fine print before agreeing to a stay.
Fortunately, there are methods to identify hidden cameras in an Airbnb or hotel room. One popular technique, as demonstrated by Kennedy’s friend, involves conducting a “flashlight test” by turning off the lights and scanning the room with a flashlight or laser pointer. Reflections indicating a camera lens can be detected using this method.
Moreover, various devices and applications are available to help detect hidden cameras, such as RF detectors capable of detecting certain camera signals, as well as software that can identify cameras connected to the Airbnb’s Wi-Fi network.
Despite these precautions, the distressing reality remains that one may discover being filmed, just as Kennedy and her friends did. They expressed feelings of violation and intend to press charges once the Royal Canadian Mounted Police conclude their investigation.
As Kennedy emphasized in her video, “The moral of the story is, always check your outlets for cameras at your Airbnb, and always listen to your super paranoid friends.” It serves as a reminder to exercise caution and vigilance while staying in unfamiliar accommodations.
