In a major announcement, the makers of Adam McKay’s Netflix comedy have revealed that Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep will be joining Jennifer Lawrence in the film’s cast. Moreover, the cast is also going to include Jonah Hill, Himesh Patel and Timothée Chalamet. And that’s not all, because a host of celebrity cameos will also be part of this upcoming film, which is scheduled to go on floors in Boston on November 19.
McKay, who has written the script for the film, will also be producing and directing it. The production will be handled by his own company Hyperobject, which was founded by him along with Kevin Messick. The cast of Don’t Look Up already includes Cate Blanchett and Rob Morgan. The actors will most likely play cameos, just like McKay’s previous directorial The Big Short had celebrities popping up stylistically every now and then. Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Matthew Perry and Tomer Sisley are some of the other artists that have signed up for the film.
The plot of Don’t Look Up revolves around two low-level scientists, played by DiCaprio and Lawrence, who discover that a meteor is about to strike Earth in six months. Upon finding this out, they set out on a media tour to warn the world about it but don’t meet much success in convincing people to believe their observations.
Ahead of Don’t Look Up, DiCaprio will be seen in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, which is an adaptation of American journalist David Grann’s book about a series of murders of wealthy Osage people that took place in Osage County, Oklahoma in the early 1920s. Unlike Scorsese’s The Irishman, this one will be streamed on Apple TV+, but it will have a theatrical release as well.
The film has been in development since 2017 and was put on the backburner as The Irishman had finally started taking shape by then. It’s budgeted at $200 million, which is not a surprise since it’s a period piece with Scorsese at the helm. The screenplay has been adopted by Eric Roth, famous for films like Forrest Gump, Munich, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Insider. Killers of the Flower Moon was scheduled for a 2021 release, but the COVID-19 pandemic is very well expected to cause a delay.
As for Meryl Streep, she has a Netflix release coming up in the form of Ryan Murphy’s The Prom. The musical comedy that also stars James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells, Ariana DeBose, and Kerry Washington, will be released on the streaming platform this December. As for Lawrence, she will soon be seen in Red, White and Water, a drama directed by Lila Neugebauer, who had directed 2017’s Room 104.
With the latest casting announcement, the already sunny prospects of Don’t Look Up are looking even more cheerful. Let’s just hope production moves smoothly and we get a release as soon as possible.
