Taika Waititi is a unique talent. He is a director who writes his own screenplays and even acts in most of his movies. The rambunctious New Zealander experienced immediate success in his home country, and it wasn’t long before Hollywood came calling along. And now, with an Academy Award and even one of the biggest MCU films under his belt, he is all set for a career that’s worth looking forward to. Today, we’re going to give you a list of every project that he has lined up for the near future.
New Star Wars movie
Arguably the biggest project in Taika’s career, the new Star Wars episode that was just announced is something that has a lot riding on it. The latest trilogy hasn’t been able to take the film franchise back to experiencing its glory days, but with Taika at the helm as director and co-writer for the next film, we expect his touch of excellence to add a new flavour to the Star Wars extravaganza. After all, he had some good practice in the Star Wars universe when he directed the season finale of The Mandalorian on Disney Plus.
Next Goal Wins
Starring Michael Fassbender and Elisabeth Moss, Next Goal Wins is a feature film that’s based on a documentary of the same name. Its story revolves around the American Samoa national football team’s journey towards qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. It’s a story worth listening to because the team was considered one of the weakest in the world during its time. Iain Morris, the creator of The Inbetweeners has assumed the writing duties for this flick, along with Taika himself.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Very few details of this film are known right now, but what we do know is that Taika Waititi will be helming this 2022 film. After delighting us with a perfect balance of quirky sequences and over-the-top action in Thor: Ragnarok, the ace director is all set to enthral us with this film from Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thor: Love and Thunder will see a female incarnation of Thor, in a manner similar to the comics, and the role will be played by Natalie Portman. Tessa Thompson will reprise her role as Valkyrie, and will apparently, also be revealed to be MCU’s first-ever LGBTQ character.
Various acting projects
Taika’s acting abilities are well known, and he isn’t letting his acting career die out by any means. His upcoming roles are as diverse as they are interesting. Shawn Levy’s Free Guy, which is scheduled to release this year, will see him playing an important role. The Ryan Reynolds starrer has its story take place inside a video game, which makes things all the more interesting. And then there are also talks that Taiki is in contention for a role in the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel. You can also expect him to reprise his role of Korg in Thor: Love and Thunder. The same character will also be part of the TV series What If…? which will premiere on Disney Plus mid-2021.
Taika Waititi sure has an extremely busy schedule ahead of him. Let’s hope none of his projects face any delays, and we’ll get to see them soon.
